Planning a Beach Vacation with Your Wheelchair
Not too long ago vacation spots were impossible, being full of inaccessibility and inconsistency; but now with the advent of new technologies and better treatment, many beach resorts and locations offer better accessible travel to and from the beach.
Simple Things:
One of the easiest things that can be done is to research Hotels and locations beforehand, gentle slopes to and from the beach rank high above locations that can only be reached via a stairwell. Another thing to think about is what the weather is like, during rainy seasons oceans can be unpredictable and violent and can surge the tides. The strength of local currents is an issue and can easily pull someone out to sea.
However, Boardwalks are often available in the immediate vicinity, providing for large lanes of accessible travel. Many of them are even paved.
Right Tool for Right Time:
Now there exist many different types of tools for you to get to the sunny sands. From a wide variety of large easily usable beach wheelchairs to stretcher services which can carry you directly to the seaside. Often these seaside amenities are offered by local vendors, or even by the Hotel itself, keep an eye out for local deals and offers.
If you’re bringing your own chair be careful. Sand can be unpredictable with electronics.
Additionally you want to look careful when you’re looking to acquire a wheelchair. There are many out there and some are more suitable than others
One thing to keep in mind is what you’re going to be doing, if you’re just going to be walking down the boardwalk you can hold onto your regular wheelchair, but if you’re going to ride near the shoreline you’ll need a beach wheelchair with wide wheels that can cope with sand. A powered wheelchair would work great under most circumstances, but keep in mind the fact that electronics and seawater do not mix well together.
Back-Ups for your Back-Up:
Like all things it’s important to remember to keep ahead and to remember that you can get easy assistance for your accessible beach trip. Many Hotels have Lifeguards that watch the beaches or have access to organizations that can assist you relax on the sand. If one plan falls through, make sure that your back-up plan covers it.
If you keep these tips and more in mind you’ll have a lovely time.
